Worried about what counseling might look like with me? Below are listed some of the most common questions I have come across in my time spent counseling. If there is a question you have that is not listed below, please feel free to reach out and ask!
This is my first time trying counseling, what does counseling look like with you?
One of the most common questions before starting therapy is "what will my therapy look like?" While every person has their own individual needs within the context of counseling, there will be a certain structure to each session aimed at addressing a variety of issues. Each session lasts approximately 50 minutes and during that time we will begin with setting an agenda, identifying strategies to address specific areas of need, and finishes with a review of discussed material in addition to homework that will be assigned between sessions. Furthermore, I understand that therapy can be an anxiety inducing endeavor and I do my very best in each session to make it a seamless, approachable, and enjoyable process as possible.
"Homework!? I haven't done homework since I was in school!"
Regardless of whether we call it homework or practice, there will be opportunities to implement strategies discussed in session during the time in-between meetings. One session a week is 50 minutes out of a total of 10,0080 minutes a week and continued practice during time outside of counseling is imperative to overall success and growth. I won't be assigning long papers or essays, but rather will be challenging you to be aware and mindful of difficulties you may face, implement discussed strategies, and return to the next session to discuss what can be improved upon.
